About Ambry
Ambry is a shareware object-oriented database program. Using a simple-to-learn interface, you can organize any data quickly and reference that data efficiently.
Use Ambry to:
• Keep track of any sort of information, such as your CD or movie collection or characters, monsters, items and so on from any campaign of any role-playing game.
• Perform calculations with objects’ properties on the fly using the built-in expressions parser.
• Store properties, text, pictures, and sounds for quick and simple reference.
• Add, remove, or change properties in all objects of a particular type through object inheritance.
• Organize word processing, drawing, or other files by dragging aliases to them into an Ambry document.
Hardware and software requirements:
Requires: Macintosh, PowerMac or compatible PowerPC computer; 4 MB RAM (2 MB free); hard disk (5 MB free); color or grayscale monitor; System 7.1 or higher.
Recommended: 8 MB RAM (6 MB free); Mac OS 8.1 or higher.
Shareware fee
Ambry is shareware. This means you can use the software to evaluate its usefulness to you; however, a dialog will remind you to register each time you launch Ambry until you register.
Registering Ambry costs $25; site licenses, which cover all locations for your organization in the world, currently cost $500. Registration of Ambry is handled by Kagi.
You can register your copy of Ambry either online at Kagi’s website, http://order.kagi.com/?QGL, or by using the Register application.
To register Ambry with the Register program, open the Register program, enter your name, email address, and the number of single user licenses you wish to purchase (or choose the site license option) for each Island Spirits program. Save, Copy, or Print the data from the Register program and send it the data and payment to Kagi.
If paying by credit card or using your First Virtual account, you can email Kagi at sales@kagi.com or fax a printout (with barcode) to +1 (510) 652-6589. Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days; orders sent via fax are typically processed within 10 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement from Kagi when the order is processed.
If you choose to pay with Cash or a USD Check, print the order from within the Register application and send the order and payment to the address on the form,
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street #392-QGL
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries (shown in the pop-up button) but if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in U.S. Dollars; Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies.
Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without payment, the form cannot be processed.
Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
Whichever payment option you choose, you must supply an email address. Once registered, you will be sent a registration code via email, which you can enter into Ambry by launching Ambry, then choosing Register from the Apple menu. Enter your name and serial number as given in the registration email. The notices at each startup of the program will go away and your conscience will be clean.
Registered users of RPG Tools 1.0 can upgrade to Ambry 1.3 for $10 by sending email to sales@badgercom.com with your RPG Tools 1.0 serial number. They will contact you with what other information they need.
Ambry may be distributed freely, as long as you only distribute an unmodified, complete copy of the archive. You may not, however, charge for it. If you want to put the Ambry package on an FTP site, a CD-ROM, or any other form of mass distribution, please let me know, so I can ensure you’re distributing the latest version and can keep you up to date when newer versions are released.
The latest version is always available from Island Spirits Software’s web site at http://www.islandspirits.com.
Software license
Please read the license contained in the User Manual carefully before installing the software. By installing or using the software, you agree to be bound by and gain the rights of this agreement. If you do not agree with the terms and conditions of this agreement, do not install or use this software.
The software license is pretty typical for a shrink-wrap license. Island Spirits doesn’t really agree with the concept of “you accepted this license by opening this envelope,” but our lawyer advised us that People Out There could do us major harm (up to and including financial ruin) if we didn’t include one.
In short, you promise not to pirate your copy of Ambry. You can install it on any number of computers you own, as long as you don’t run it on multiple computers at once. Island Spirits Software can’t guarantee the software will do anything useful — or even that it won’t destroy your computer.
Future directions
The next version of Ambry is already in development. Although the feature set isn’t yet finalized, I plan to include enhanced Appearance Manager support and other Mac OS 8.5 features, refined and completed AppleScript support, and — as always — several enhancements to existing features.
If you're interested in the ongoing development of Ambry, you can join the Island Spirits development mailing list by sending email to ispirits-dev-request@islandspirits.com with “subscribe” in the body of the message; I use the list to post regular notes on progress and engage in creature feeping with the demanding masses. Subscribing to the development list automatically also subscribes you to the announcement list.
If you merely want to be informed of Island Spirits product releases, you can join the announcement list by sending email to ispirits-announce-request@islandspirits.com with “subscribe” in the body of the message. The announce list is very low-volume — on the order of one or two messages every couple of months.
Subscription to these lists will only result in email from the lists. Island Spirits will never give or sell your email address to third parties.
Contacting the author
I love to hear ideas for future versions of Ambry or getting bug reports about the latest version. If you want to contact me directly, you can send me email at support@islandspirits.com. I respond to each email I get, but sometimes I get overwhelmed by the amount of mail in my inbox and it can take a while.
